PRESS RELEASE: Lynchburg Democrats for City Council Announce Campaign Launch

Lynchburg Democratic candidates will officially launch their campaign at the base of Monument Terrace on Thursday

Lynchburg, Virginia (May 21)Lynchburg Better Together will announce a campaign launch on Thursday, May 23 at 12:00 PM at the base of the Monument Terrace steps (9th and Church Street) to introduce the four Democratic City Council candidates running for a seat on November 5, 2024. Randy Smith (Ward 1), Dr. Sterling Wilder (Ward 2), Dr. James Coleman (Ward 3), and April Watson (Ward 4) will be joined by friends, families and supporters.

The candidates will outline their vision for a Lynchburg that represents all residents—prioritizing civility and cooperation amongst council members. The candidates agree that the city council needs to get back to the business of helping Lynchburg thrive, and will emphasize community development and support for our outstanding public schools.

Sterling Wilder declared, "I was first elected to represent Ward 2 back in 2016. For most of those eight years, Lynchburg City Council was a place of decency. We didn't always agree, but we operated with mutual respect and civility. It's embarrassing to see the rudeness and outright hostility shown by Republican members of City Council -- to their fellow Council Members and to City Employees that work hard to make Lynchburg a great place to live. I know we can do better."

As April Watson told the News & Advance, “The schools are a priority for me. I think, sure, there’s work to do, but also I believe in funding our public schools...currently, the city council appoints school board members, and we have to appoint people who believe in public education.”

A detailed biography of each candidate is available at www.lynchburgbettertogether.org, along with helpful information about planning your vote, and ways you can get involved!
